The University of Embu (UoEm) was founded as a Constituent College of the University of Nairobi through Legal Notice No. 65 dated 17th June 2011 by His Excellency the President. It succeeded the former Embu Agricultural Staff Training (EAST) College, which began in 1947 as an agricultural training school and was renamed Embu Institute of Agriculture in 1968. By 1990, the institution had advanced to become Embu Agricultural Staff Training (EAST) College, with a core role of offering short courses in management and technical fields, along with conducting research and consultancy services aimed at boosting performance in the agricultural sector.
This setup remained in place until June 2011, when the College transitioned into Embu University College through the same Legal Notice No. 65. Following the elevation from EAST College, the EUC Council was officially inaugurated by President Mwai Kibaki. A major milestone was achieved on Friday, 7th October 2016, marking the transformation of Embu University College from a Constituent College of UoN to a fully-fledged university. On this day, the University of Embu was granted a Charter by H.E. President Uhuru Kenyatta during a ceremony held at State House, Nairobi.
